NAN MCDOWELL
Nan is a self-taught artist; she always loved to sketch, but didn’t pick up a paint brush until her mid 30’s when started working with oils focusing on western themed paintings. With the passing of her husband in 2013, a need to “lighten her approach” had her exploring acrylics and broadening her subject matter. Acrylic is currently her preferred medium.
Her art’s main focus is to convey a universal emotion that each observer would be able to personally identify with. In an attempt to create a recognizable style of her art, Nan focuses on the eyes of her portraits, particularly of women with attitude. Additionally, she loves to portray western themes, the galaxy, the homeless with dignity, and an occasional abstract. She states “At my core, I have never painted to sell, but to express the human condition that I would see and feel around me”.
Her past solo shows included Circle Cinema (Tulsa 2015), The Equality Center (Tulsa 2016), The Hive, (Duel Show-Jenks 2017), Spanish Peaks Art Center (LaVeta, CO 2021). Accepted submissions into numerous other juried and non-juried shows in Oklahoma and Colorado.
Now Nan happily settled in her tiny house in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Side note- Nan had an epiphany at nine years old that she would live to be at least 100. She will be 85 this summer, which gives her at least another 15 years to hone her skills. She sees every day as a chance to create and to embrace life fully and hopes that this is reflected in her art.
